Coffee Drinker Statistics 2012

According to the latest National Coffee Drinking Study from the National Coffee Association, 40% of 18-24 year olds are drinking coffee each day — this is a sharp rise from the 31% of this age group who said they enjoyed a daily dose of java during 2010. This increase brought the consumption of coffee among this age group back to its 2009 level. Not surprisingly, coffee businesses find that their regular customers are in the younger age group, particularly highscool, college, and newly employed

  1. This number for consumption of coffee is surprisingly high. When I was kid, I was told by mom that coffee is a drink for adult who can enjoy their bitter taste. But now including Starbucks, they offer several kinds of flavor of coffee and coffee-tasted dessert drinks. Now coffee is for any generations!

  2. Coffee is very popular in U.S. Everytime I passed by starbuck coffee shop at our campus, I always see people waiting in a long line to buy a cup of coffee. I agree that coffee is for any generations. My father also addicts to coffee, but only loves one brand "starbuck". When there are coupons for starbucks instant and microground coffee at costco, he will buy them as many as possible with the coupons and then store the coffee for later use.

  3. I have to have a cup of coffee in the morning; otherwise, I would feel tired all day long. I am personally a huge fan of coffee with milk, not pure black coffee, that I could spend so much time looking for good coffee places. I recently like coffee bean's earl gray tea latte, but that tastes like a sugar drink, not really coffee.

  4. I'm not a huge fan of the taste of coffee, but I love the caffeine. I do remember not being allowed to have coffee when I was younger (not that I minded, I hated the taste). Now I won't let my children drink it either; I will, however, let them have their own "special" coffee drink when I go to Starbucks. Their "special coffee" is just chocolate milk with caramel in it and whip cream on top, safe for all ages.

  5. This upswing of young coffee drinkers is great news for your business. I could just picture your cafe on wheels surrounded by a pack of young hipsters standing around sipping on their lattes.

  7. I drink coffee at least once a day. Lately, coffee shop provide many kind of drink so that even though some people don't like coffee, they still go to coffee shop.

  8. I tend to drink coffee at least once per day. The statistics for the number people in the 18-24 years old range has increased maybe because of the environment the coffee shops (such as Starbucks) are creating for their consumers. Many students, even if they are not avid coffee drinkers, are going to these coffee shops to be in the environment (nice small place where they can sit down, socialize, or finish class work), and I feel this very beneficial towards the coffee industry.

  9. Coffee is one of the most popular drink. What type of coffee do you plan? How special is it? If not, what reasons will people choose your coffee?

  10. This is a big number of coffee drinkers. So many people cannot have enough sleep because of their jobs, schools, or other night works. That's why people need coffee in day time to keep them awake. So people have habits to drink coffee everyday and coffee shop can make a lot of money with this habit.

  11. This is an interesting statistic. I'd like to know why the sharp increase occurred. I feel like this is a very interesting fact. Anyways, this is good for your business!

  12. I would assume that the numbers where higher for those in that age group because high school and college students need the caffine to stay awake. the statistics are very interesting and only provide support for your business venture.

  13. I started drinking coffee when I was in high school because there were lots of work for me to do. Now I usually drink two cups of coffee every day. Actually I just can't live without it. I believe people of younger age do need coffee to keep themselves energetic.

  14. I cant believe how much the coffee industry has grown and that the age of people consuming coffee is getting younger and younger. This means that the coffee industry is becoming more and more lucrative. If you start off with a small coffee store and market to the local colleges and schools and you can then open more stores from there.

  15. Although I am not part of the 40% who drink coffee every day, this statistic is not that surprising to me since almost all of my friends drink coffee every morning to start their day. Your coffee business will do great according to how much people depend on coffee to make it through their days!

  16. I'm in that 40% group. Coffee does really help me stay awake and alert throughout the day. I actually thought that the highest percentage of people who drink coffee would be older.

  17. Although I am not part of that 40% group I do drink coffee occasionally. However I do notice that coffee drinkers are of the younger age group. Many local coffee shops often are very successful in catering to their community and target market if effectively marketed. I think what you have here is great, looking forward to see what else you can offer.

  18. I think coffee now is like fashion. People don't think that they need coffee to keep them awake but they think that a place for them to hangout nad chat with their friends.

  19. I can see that being true. I'm a coffee addict but when you're working full time and going to school you need an extra kick to keep you going. I feel as though that age group also applies to the energy drink drinkers too.

  20. I believe that this statistic is so high because of all the fancy dessert coffee drinks that Starbucks and Coffee Bean offers. These treats are what are attracting the younger generations and getting them hooked at such a young age

  21. I wonder what effect energy drinks had on these statistics. In the 18-24 age group there is a large populations of energy drink consumers. As studies discussing the side effects of energy drink consumption seemingly decrease the public interest in them there may have been renewed interest in coffee consumption. This may be something worth noting. The working population seems to have had an increase in its younger members, this could lead to a new untapped market for the caffeine industry.

  22. These are very high numbers for this age group and they are most likely related to the convenience of obtaining coffee with so many different Starbucks locations. Starbucks has done a good job of focusing on this age group.

  23. I think itd be more interesting to look at the types of coffee that these demographics are purchasing. Im sure that the younger age bracket isnt ordering the same coffee as the average blue collar american on their morning commute
